Art City launched in January 2024, quickly assembling a coalition of artists, builders, architects, and local officials united by the vision of creating a new kind of artistic community. Conceived as a "network state" - bridging digital and physical realms - the project began with site planning at the 40-acre Ranch in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
Infrastructure development commenced in February, establishing essential utilities and welcoming the first major installations. The landscape was transformed by significant works, including the 25-foot "Launch Intention" sculpture, Fnnch's Lips, Autumn Spire, and the Electric Dandelions, setting the tone for Art City's artistic ambitions.
March and April saw rapid infrastructure development. A Quonset hut emerged as the community hub, with full Kitchen, bathroom facilities, and a spa-like bathhouse. Diverse accommodation options, from artistically remodeled trailers to shift pods and camping sites, were created, establishing Art City's unique hospitality offering.
Operations began in May with the first ticketed visitors and campers. The site expanded with more artworks, including Evolution Field, Paradisium Forest, Mind's Eye, and Facing the Fearbeast. The Museum of No Spectators opened, adding an interactive dimension to the visitor experience.
By summer, Art City was functioning as a full-fledged arts destination, garnering positive reviews and attracting diverse visitors. The site established its presence on hipcamp and airbnb, formed local business partnerships, and gained significant media attention, including coverage from Artnet News.
The growing artist residency program and expanding infrastructure will support increased visitation, while art sales and placement programs promise to create more value for participating artists.
In less than a year, Art City transformed from concept to reality, demonstrating the power of collaborative vision and efficient execution. This achievement sets the foundation for continued growth and impact, both in Tucumcari and as a model for artistic community development.
